Y is for Youth

Y is for Youth

It cannot be defined by age, size, or education level.  It has nothing to do with a certain level of maturity and is unfairly blamed for a lot of bad decisions.  We confuse our children by pressing them to grow out of it, and then turn right around and search for ways to get it back.  There are those who seem to have more of it and as a result attract others to them like neighborhood kids to an ice cream truck.

Young at heart is so much more than a popular song, or movie, or book.  It is a state of being.  It has inspired folklore and legends alike about a magical fountain from which it possibly flows, prompting adventurous searches.  The irony being that the hunt alone was an indication of infliction.

I have been blessed with my parent’s DNA which allow me to look years younger than I actually am, but I also feel that I’m the recipient of an abnormally active youth gene.  Just ask my wife and she’ll tell you about having to raise FOUR kids (three actual).  At times that means I have to "act my age" and forgo what I'd really like to be doing, shamed into harnessing my youthful exuberance.  But sooner or later it always breaks free.

Our young don't have the monopoly on youth.

  1. Here, here! I've felt about 18 years old for the last 20 years. lol. ANd it's so true you can't wait to grow up and then wish you could go back. I miss being a kid, but I do not miss the teenage years. As I'm pushing the big 40, I always get a kick out of being carded for wine. I always say 'thank you' to the clerk. ;)

  2. Perhaps Mr. Shaw was correct, "Youth is wasted on the young."

  3. Who wants to act their age? Not me. I still think I'm in my twenties until my body tells me that I'm crazy.

  4. Youthful behavior is an illusion. Childish behavior isn't, but like you suggested, "youthful" is merely another way of saying that you're open to life's possibilities, and having a little unregulated fun.

  5. People think I'm younger nearly all the time. Soon I won't be able to hide part of my age though. I'm already starting to get a couple silver hairs on top where they glimmer. But I'll keep smiling like I'm still in my 20's.

  6. I'm not as old as I am either ... if that makes sense. Teaching definitely keeps me feeling young. My knees however are a whole 'nother story. They've gotta be a whole lot older than I am... :)

  7. I also look years younger than my actual age. And since we don't have kids, I get to be youthful whenever I want!

  8. I'm no longer insultingly being taken for a teenager, but most people are still shocked to find out my real age. I'd rather be assumed to be somewhere in my twenties at 32 than insulted by people who think I'm 18 or even 12. I wish I could've snapped at the old guy who accused me, at 19, of skipping school and then told me I looked all of 12, that I don't know any 12 year olds with such a huge chest!

  9. You're as young or old as you feel. Love meeting people that embrace this in life.

On a side note, I wanted to thank you for hosting the challenge. It's been incredible. Thanks so much.

  10. Age is just a number :) I don't think I'll ever really "grow up." *blows raspberyr* Last one to the ice cream truck is a poopy-pants!

  11. Sometimes I think the older I get, the younger I feel, is that weird?

  12. We are only as old as we allow ourselves to feel, although sometimes it's easy to give in to the aches and pains that creep up occasionally :)

  14. I've said for years that I can't be a senior citizen, I've never even been middle-aged (that has always been ten years older than me). LOL!

  17. I want my babies to stay little forever! Funny...how we can't wait to grow up and then once we are grown we want the aging process to slow down! I'm 34, and when the hubby and I go out to dinner, if I don't get carded when ordering a drink, it pretty much means I'm ordering two. :)

  19. I'm raising for boys, including my husband, so I feel for your wife. :) It's great to be young at heart.

  20. Ah youth. It's so wasted on the young.

  21. Oh. That's wonderful! I don't always feel young in body but I still feel youthful.
    Well said.
    1 more letter!

  22. The older I become, the younger I become. :) It has to do with the realization that life is so short and so very precious. I believe being young at heart is the best way to fully appreciate life.

    Wonderful post, DL! :)

  23. I don't gamble, but was walking through a casino once to go to the buffet (cause I do like me some buffet) and I got carded.

I think I jumped three, maybe four feet into the air I was so excited that someone thought I looked younger than 40.

I was so happy that day. I will remember it the rest of my life.

  24. My mother was fond of saying, "You can't get away from those genes."
Ha... and sometimes that's a good thing! Fun post!

  25. LOVE this post. And, since Alex gave me the Youthfulness honor, I'll have to say that I have decided to embrace my inner child and let her play. Of course, I still wrestle with being a responsible parent vs. carefree. Maybe being a parent gives me permission to play. I don't know.
